Auckland Day 2 5/9/13

We got woken up by housekeeping hammering on the door at about 9:30 when they had gone away I made some coffee and started to feel a little more awake. Byrnie took the opportunity of aligned timezones to call Jen in the UK and I did some fiddling around updating this thing and so on.

Today the plan was to continue to acclimatize maybe do some touristy things and locate a local sim card so phones will work and get data.

The shower has only 15 minutes of continuous hot water so we had to have quick showers a far cry from the dual bathroom days of PAX. Once we were ready we headed out this time remembering to wear coats. First we headed out to get some breakfast/lunch as it was getting on in the day. We started with smoothies I had tropical Byrnie had very berry and then we both had burgers. I went for a Mexi melt which was a beef burger with some onions and peppers and cheese with a side of curly fries. Which was quite tasty and did the job. Brynie went for the massive triple decker premium burger which had three beef burgers cheese onions topped with a fried egg and curly fries. This may have been a step too far and though he bested the burger he made a sort of groaning noise everytime food was mentioned.

Refueled we headed out to find sim cards, Byrnie had looked online and found a local sim provider with a pretty good deal on data so we went in search of someone that would sell us on. We found a lot of vodaphone shops but not many places that did other sims. Eventually we found a little shop tucked in a small area in front of a currency exchange place. My Phone is unlocked but we weren’t sure about Byrnies so we bought one of the sims to try out and then if it worked in his phone we could get another for mine. While we waited to see if it would connect we grabbed a coffee. The text confirming the network connection came through and we grabbed another sim.

We decided to have a wander down to the front and take a look. It was a pretty nice day by this point if a little windy we walked along the shore doing the tourist thing taking pictures and so on. After a nice walk we headed back grabbing a few bits we needed from the supermarket. Byrnie had just renewed his drivers license but it hadn’t arrived before he had to leave so he needed to get a thing from the DVLA. So he arranged via skype for them to fax through proof of a driving license so he can be a secondary driver on the rental car.

We had some sushi and relaxed watching some futurama, family guy, south park, and some weird other shows. Tomorrow we head off to Lake Taupo and start the driving portion of the holiday.
